Employer developed standards ensure that learners gain the skills employers seek, and employers can be confident that learners have the knowledge, skills and behaviours for a particular specialist role. This ensures mutual confidence that the degree can offer careers that align to industry standards and therefore enhance employability.

The Foundation Degree in Early Years Leadership, based in the School of Children, Young People and Families at Leeds Trinity University, is a new, high-quality programme that focuses on work-based learning. The course has been developed in collaboration with local early years employers, who supported the application and development of the curriculum content. The IfATE accreditation allows the course to display a quality mark, which helps learners and employers to identify a high-standard qualification.

Mike Dessington, Head of School of Children, Young People and Families at Leeds Trinity University, said: “We are delighted to have received this accreditation, which further solidifies our commitment to offer industry-leading training in education.

“The Foundation Degree in Early Years Leadership was designed in collaboration with employers to specifically target and support the needs of the early years sector. We believe that this foundation degree will not only enhance the professional development of individuals but also contribute positively to the quality of early years education in our community.”

Joanne Hickling, Managing Director at Wellingtons Nursery, said: “As an employer of a private, voluntary and independent nursery in the Leeds area, I value the introduction of the Foundation Degree in Early Years Leadership. Having previously combined work and study at Leeds Trinity University, I have experienced the significance that an Early Years qualification can have on wider setting practice and how this directly impacts outcomes for children.”

The Foundation Degree in Early Years Leadership aims to equip practitioners with the essential skills and knowledge required to lead and inspire within early years settings and respond to the evolving demands of the sector. The degree is designed to be an accessible and flexible route into education, allowing practitioners to balance their studies with work commitments. It includes a combination of online learning, workshops, and practical placements, ensuring that students can apply their learning in real-world settings.

Recruitment for the Early Years Leadership Foundation Degree is now open and more information about entry requirements and course content can be found on the University website.
