Course modules

You will study a variety of modules across your programme of study. The module details given below are subject to change and are the latest example of the curriculum available on this course of study.

Core modules

You will study the following modules throughout your degree.

Construction Technology and Design 3

You will build on your prior knowledge, focusing on advanced concepts and techniques in construction design. You will emphasise the importance of handling construction activities with sensitivity, particularly regarding land use for infrastructure and development.

Ethical considerations and climate-conscious approaches are central, ensuring that construction activities do not disproportionately impact marginalised communities. You will consider how pro-climate change policies and designs can align with social justice principles by addressing environmental inequalities and promoting equitable access to a sustainable built environment. You will also have the opportunity to select industry-specific topics through a co-creation element.

Professional Practices of Project Management

You will be equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to manage construction projects effectively and lead project teams. You will explore project management methodologies such as PMBOK, SCRUM, Agile, Lean, and modular/prefab projects, along with tools and techniques like work breakdown structures, Gantt charts, and critical path analysis. You will cover essential areas of project management, including scope, time, cost, quality, risk, and stakeholder management. Through real-world scenarios, you will gain practical experience in project planning, execution, and control, giving you a solid grounding in professional project management practices.

Managing Construction Contracts and Procurement Strategies

You will gain knowledge and skills in managing construction contracts and developing procurement strategies. Covering various contractual arrangements, dispute factors, and the legal frameworks surrounding construction project procurement. Emphasis will be placed on non-adversarial factors influencing procurement decisions through case studies and practical exercises in collaboration with industry professionals. Real-world scenarios will help you develop key competencies in contract administration, procurement methods, and risk management.

Construction and Property Economics

You will focus on the economic aspects of construction and property development. You will learn about economic principles relevant to the construction industry, including supply and demand, cost estimation, and financial analysis. Topics you will cover include project feasibility, investment appraisal, cost control, market analysis, property valuation, and property investment strategies. You will gain a comprehensive understanding of the economic factors influencing construction projects and property development, enabling you to make informed decisions and manage resources effectively.

Dissertation

The dissertation gives you the opportunity to undertake independent research in a specific area of construction management. You will work closely with your supervisor to define your research topic, conduct a literature review, collect and analyse data, and present your findings. This allows you to demonstrate research skills, critical thinking, and an in-depth understanding of a particular aspect of construction management, contributing to the field's knowledge base.

Learning and teaching

You will be assessed by a variety of methods which include:

  • Written reports
  • Drawings and phase tests
  • Exams
